Year 6

Year 6 Curriculum

This term we will explore “Our World” primarily through the lenses of History and Geography. Our learning journey will take us from the build-up to World War II through to its end. We will consider why Britain went to war. We will try to understand the process and experience of evacuation; how Britain defended itself and significant aspects of the period including the Battle of Britain. We will also further our understanding and appreciation of historical sources, their reliability and the role they play in helping us to understand the past. A trip to Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool will highlight the important role our locality played in the war effort.

Through exploration of our school mission statement, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ we will explore ideas of belonging, spend time exploring John's Gospel and consider deep questions through the lenses of both Christian and humanist experience. Our school values will run throughout our learning as we consider diversity and equality through key moments in both social and political history and why they are so important in today’s world.

Our geography focus will be a depth study of North America where we will explore aspects of physical and human geography.

In science we will study electricity and light, deepening the understanding of scientific vocabulary and enquiry. Pupils will be encouraged to investigate in all lessons, ensuring scientific curiosity is at the heart of learning.

PE focuses on health and fitness and tactics and strategies through basketball. Art and DT are closely linked to the 'Our World' curriculum: drawing to express  feelings and inner ideas will be our artistic focus and the wartime effort of make do and mend will be the focus of the textiles design unit.

We also have the privilege of our residential trip to Robin Wood to look forward to, which will further embed our school mission and values as well as developing our compassion, resilience and teamwork in this crucial year.

We look forward to your support throughout the year and always welcome your expertise should you have any you wish to offer.
