Year 4

Year 4 Curriculum Overview (Spring Term)

During the Spring Term, our learning will focus on Social Justice through themes of empathy, belonging, and understanding others, alongside an exciting focus on STEAM. In the first half of the term, we will be reading Wisp, a beautifully illustrated text that helps children explore feelings and emotions through the experiences of a child who feels displaced and is searching for safety and connection. This story will form the basis of our Literacy work, encouraging thoughtful discussion, emotional awareness, and creative writing.

In the second half of the term, our learning will be driven by STEAM, where children will develop their curiosity, problem-solving skills, and creativity through hands-on, practical activities that link science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

In History, we will be looking at the Maya civilisation, exploring what life was like for them. This will include how we know about the civilisation, differences between the rich and poor, and how they grew to become a successful empire. During Geography lessons this term, we will be learning about transport and trade within the UK.

In our RE lessons, we continue to explore Christianity and the year 4 curriculum world faith, which is Judaism. This half term, we look at the effect of Christianity on individuals and focus on the sacrament of Holy Communion. We consider the importance of rule and laws in the Jewish faith and what it’s like to be a Jewish person in today’s society. After half term, we consider the existence and role of God in both religions and then move onto the events of Holy Week. We culminate the term by considering how the Bible helps people today.

In Music, the children will use body and tuned percussion to investigate and compose a rainforest-themed piece of music, focusing on structure, texture, and motifs. In our Spanish lessons, the children will be learning about the weather!

In Spring 1, the children will have the opportunity to explore their emotions through work with Flourish, helping them to build emotional understanding and resilience. In Spring 2, the children will take part in a full week of swimming to develop water confidence and safety.

Across the term, the children will learn about electricity through Science and DT, supporting their understanding of global goals.

We will also be reading Revolting Rhymes and Cloud Busting, allowing the children to explore a wide range of poetry.
