At St. Bridget’s, our vision for physical education is to develop confident, skilled, and motivated learners who recognise the importance of physical activity for a healthy and fulfilling life. Throughout their time with us, children will acquire new knowledge and skills with confidence, building a deep and secure understanding of PE and its role in their overall development.
We aim to foster a love for physical activity through a wide variety of experiences. Pupils are encouraged to practise and apply their skills in different settings—individually, in small groups, and as part of a team—demonstrating high levels of performance and a commitment to improvement. Through this, they also develop creativity, imagination, and tactical thinking in areas such as dance, games, and gymnastics.
Physical fitness and healthy living are key components of our curriculum. Children learn the importance of regular exercise, a balanced diet, and making healthy lifestyle choices, including avoiding harmful substances. We promote sustained physical activity and ensure pupils understand how it supports long-term health and wellbeing.
Leadership is another vital element of our PE vision. We provide opportunities for pupils to take initiative as leaders, organisers, and officials. They learn how to evaluate performance—both their own and others'—and develop the ability to motivate their peers and demonstrate excellent sporting attitudes such as fairness, teamwork, and resilience.
We also value independence and encourage pupils to take ownership of their development. They are supported to work confidently and independently over time, setting goals and striving for personal excellence. A strong enthusiasm for PE is nurtured in every child, with all pupils encouraged to participate fully in lessons and take advantage of the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer.
Finally, we are committed to ensuring all pupils leave primary school able to swim at least 25 metres and understand how to stay safe in and around water—essential life skills that form part of our broader commitment to physical education and safety.
