Year 1 Curriculum Overview (Spring Term)
This Spring term, we have the whole school focus on ‘Our Community’. For the first half term we will explore ‘Social Justice; Refugees’. The children will learn some very interesting elements,
which include equality, fairness, refugees and homes. We will be researching Jesus as a refugee and we will be learning about additional refugees through a MEAS workshop, looking at how their lives were affected by this. In geography we will be focusing on human and physical features in the environment and creating a map of our school grounds using a basic key. We will also be developing our language of North, South, East and West to describe where the different UK countries are in comparison to one another.
There are many books we will be reading and studying. We will particularly focus on the text ‘Beegu’ in literacy to help the children consider the topic of social justice. In art we will be exploring painting and mixed media as well as painting through the use of print. Whilst in science we will be learning all about seasonal changes.
In the second half of Spring we will move onto ‘STEAM’. In DT we will be creating vehicles using wheels and axles. We will be learning how to be engineers, using the iterative process to plan, create, evaluate and improve our models. Science activities will focus on our sensitive bodies, naming body parts as well as our senses and how they help us.
