Year 1

Year 1 Curriculum Overview (Spring Term)

During the Spring term, we have a whole school curriculum connection to ‘Our Community’. For the first half term we will explore ‘Social Justice’. The children will explore some very interesting elements, which include equality, fairness, refugees and homes. We will be researching Jesus as a refugee and we will be learning about other refugees through a MEAS workshop and looking at how their lives were affected. In geography we will be focusing on human and physical features in the environment and creating a map of our school grounds using a basic key. We will also be developing our language of North, South, East and West to describe where the different UK countries are in comparison to one another.

There are many books that we will be reading and studying. We will particularly focus on the texts ‘Look Up’ and ‘Beegu’ in literacy to help the children consider the topic of social justice. In art we will be exploring painting and mixed media as well as painting through the use of print. Whilst in science we will be learning all about our sensitive body, naming body parts as well as our senses and how they help us.

In the second half of Spring we will move onto ‘STEAM’, where we will use the text ‘Clink’ to launch this theme. In DT we will be creating a toy using wheels and axles. We will be learning how to be engineers, using the iterative process to plan, create, evaluate and improve our models. This will be supported by our history lessons, where the children will learn about toys from the past and compare them to toys now. Science activities will focus on comparing and grouping animals by their characteristics, physical features, and diets.
