Year 2 Curriculum

Year 2 Curriculum

This term the whole school will explore the curriculum in connection with ''Our World".

In Maths we start off the term by solidifying the children's number sense and place value of 2 digit numbers. We then mainly focus on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) using a mix of practical and abstract materials to deepen their understanding. Our history topic acts as a stimulus for our Literacy, we will be using the book "The Sea of Tranquility" to think about space exploration, generating descriptions of the Moon, letter writing as Neil Armstrong and a newspaper of the Moon landing. In the second half of the term, we will be using the book "Toby and The Great Fire of London", to inspire our writing. This will include a recount, a poem and a diary inspired by Samuel Pepys'.

In history we are exploring the topic of space looking at some key individuals. We will be learning about the life of Neil Armstrong and later on we will compare his experiences to that of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. The children’s knowledge of Neil Armstrong will be transferred to their artwork creating a mixed media collage of the Moon. After half term we will be looking at the Great Fire of London. We will be using sources (such as Samuel Pepys' diary) to investigate why it happened and how the fire ended.  In geography we will be learning about the continents and oceans within our World. As well as developing an understanding of the North Pole, South Pole and the Equator. We will use this knowledge to explore why some countries are hot and others are cold.

In science we will study the difference between living, once lived and never lived things. We will explore the different life processes living things do and start to look at habitats around our world. After half term we will look deeper into habitats by exploring micro-habitats.

In P.E this term we will be studying both gymnastics and dance. In gymnastics we will be exploring basic shapes, travelling moves and jumps. We will then be transferring these onto apparatus. After half term in line with our exploration of the Great Fire of London, we will be creating a dance linked to the topic. We will think about counting in 8's, cannon, expression and levels. In computing the children will build upon their Year 1 knowledge of keeping safe online whilst also using both ipads and chrome books to develop word processing skills. P.S.H.E will take on a dual focus, focussing on internet safety through the use of Project Evolve are other focus will be on citizenship helping the children to become responsible individuals in the world.

In R.E children will develop an awareness of both Christianity and Islam and look at the similarities and differences between the two faiths. Thinking about why both Jesus and Mohammad (PBUH) were special. The children will also partake in church services including the harvest festival and advent service. The children will then have the opportunity to lead a Christmas Service.
